Why does the door glass fog up?

Steam from whatever you are cooking works its way between the panes, and the cooler glass at the front is where it settles. On most ovens it clears again as the door warms through and you forget all about it. When the haze is still there on a cold oven days later, Viking Repair Pros of Los Angeles should see the door.

What you can see, what it means, what to do now

See it

A cloudy patch inside the glass that will not wipe away from either side, because it is not on either side. It appears while the oven is heating, sits heaviest in the middle of the pane, and usually thins out as the door gets hot.

What it means

Oven doors breathe. Air and moisture move through them as they heat and cool, so condensation between the panes is ordinary and passes on its own. A permanent film is a different thing: that is residue baked onto the inner face, and it only comes off with the door apart.

What to do tonight

Run the oven empty for a while and watch whether the cloud thins as the glass heats. If it does, there is nothing here to fix. Either way, leave the door itself alone: the panes sit in brackets behind the door skin and are not a kitchen job.

Still doing it after that? Call Viking Repair Pros of Los Angeles on (213) 652-7030. The $89 visit covers the fault-finding and comes off the repair.

Telling steam apart from a stain

The test here is patience rather than cleaning. Condensation answers to temperature: cold oven, cloudy glass; hot oven, clear glass. Anything that ignores the oven entirely and looks the same at breakfast as it did the night before is a deposit, and a deposit got in because the door is passing more than it should. That points at the seal around the glass, and on a door that has been opened and shut for years in a kitchen near the coast it is not a surprising place to find wear.

Follow-ups

Does a fogged door mean the seal has failed?

Not on its own. A door can mist up every Sunday for years and still shut perfectly well, because the glass is not sealed the way a window unit is. What does point at a problem is heat you can feel escaping at the edges, baking that has gone uneven, or a gap visible along the top.
