Warning signs · Viking ovens
Why won't self-clean start?
Most of the time the oven is refusing rather than failing. A cleaning cycle only begins once the door is properly shut and the latch has confirmed it, so anything holding the door a fraction open stops the whole thing before any heat arrives. If the door is plainly closed and still nothing happens, the latch is a job for Viking Repair Pros of Los Angeles.
What you can see, what it means, what to do now
See it
You choose the cleaning setting and the oven goes no further. Some controls ignore the press entirely, some beep once and drop back to the clock, and some sit showing the setting without ever locking the door or warming up.
What it means
The interlock comes first: an oven will not run a cleaning cycle with a door it cannot prove is shut. A door sitting out of square, a rack end in the way, or a latch whose switch no longer reports its position all look identical from the front.
What to do tonight
Push the door firmly closed and try once more. Take out whatever your use and care guide says should come out before a clean, foil included, and check that nothing is caught along the bottom edge. Let a hot oven cool right down first.
Still doing it after that? Call Viking Repair Pros of Los Angeles on (213) 652-7030. The $89 visit covers the fault-finding and comes off the repair.
The order an oven does things in
A cleaning cycle is the one thing your oven will not be talked into. Before any heat arrives, the control wants the door shut, the latch driven across, and a signal coming back to say it got there. Only then does it commit. That sequence is why a refusal so often has nothing to do with heating at all, and why the answer is more often a hinge or a latch than a board. It is also why forcing the issue gets you nowhere: there is nothing yet to force.

Follow-ups
Should I keep trying if it will not take?
Two attempts tell you as much as ten. If the second ends the same way, the oven has made its position clear, and repeating it only works the latch motor harder on a door that is already not closing right. Book a visit instead and let somebody watch what the latch actually does.
